English translator and Protestant martyr; his translation of the Bible into English (which later formed the basis for the King James Version) aroused ecclesiastical opposition; he left England in 1524 and was burned at the stake in Antwerp as a heretic (1494-1536) 英国の翻訳者でプロテスタントの殉教者。教会の反対を喚起させた彼の聖書の英語への翻訳（後に欽定英訳聖書の基礎を作った）。1524年にイギリスを出て、異端者としてアントワープで火刑に処せられた（1494年−1536年）。
