a group of more than 800 islands (100 inhabited) in the southwestern Pacific; larger islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu) are of volcanic origin surrounded by coral reefs; smaller islands are coral 南西太平洋の800島以上の島（100島は住民がいる）の集団。もともと火山だった大島（ビティレブとバヌアレブ）の周囲を珊瑚礁が取り巻いている。小島は珊瑚質である。
